An Audiologist is a hearing health care professional who works to prevent, identify and assess hearing loss in individuals. Audiologists determine whether a client can hear within the normal range, and if not, the nature and severity of hearing loss. Rehabilitation of hearing loss can by administered by an Audiologist through fitting of hearing aids and/or Assistive Listening Devices. Audiologists work with a wide range of clientele from infants through to seniors.
Other areas of audiology include assessment of auditory processing disorders (i.e., the ability to listen and process instructions and information in the presence of noise), as well as aural rehabilitation whereby clients are seen in order to help them use their hearing aids, cochlear implants or assistive listening devices in order to listen and hear better with their equipment. Audiologists strive to counsel their clients in all areas of troubleshooting and maintenance of equipment, as well as counselling their clients and families in strategies to enhance all areas of listening and communication skills.
