Hearing Aid Types

Hearing aids are available in a variety of styles designed to meet different cosmetic preferences and address different hearing loss needs. Your hearing care professional can help you identify which hearing aid styles are appropriate for your specific needs.

Behind-The-Ear (Bte)

  • available in super power, standard, mini, or micro sizes.
  • all components contained in a case worn behind the ear.
  • sound directed into the ear canal through through tubing and earmold or thin tube and dome.
  • can be fit with standard domes or custom earmolds.
  • may be slightly visible when worn.
  • for mild to severe hearing losses.
  • variety of color options available.

Invisible-In-The-Canal (Iic)

Invisible-In-The-Canal (IIC) hearing aids go even further to stay out of sight—literally. Like Canal-style hearing aids, these tiny instruments are custom made to fit inside your ear canal. However, IIC devices sit beyond the second bend of the canal. Because they’re deeper in the ear, they’re not at all apparent; IIC devices typically come in shades to mimic the shadows of the ear.

Invisible-in-the-Canal Features:

  • custom fit.
  • virtually invisible.
  • sound directed into the ear canal through through tubing and earmold or thin tube and dome.
  • for mild to moderate hearing losses.
  • dark color designed to blend with the shadows of the ear.

Canal Styles (CIC, ITC, ITE)

Canal-style devices are among the smallest hearing instruments. They hide within your ear canal, so they’re custom made to fit you exactly. There are several kinds of canal-style devices: A Completely-In-Canal (CIC) device fits the deepest within the canal; a tiny extension cord is used to place and remove the instrument. In-The-Canal (ITC) devices are slightly larger, so they extend farther out but remain very hidden. With an In-The-Ear (ITE) model, you will see some of the device’s face, depending on the size and shape of your ear.

Canal Model Features:
  • Custom fit.
  • CIC models are nearly invisible.
  • CIC and itc models are suitable for mild to moderate hearing losses.
  • ITE models are suitable for moderate to severe hearing losses.
  • Skin tone colors available.
